Improve the Cooling Efficiency of Your Home's Air Conditioner

Your air conditioner is going to be working overtime as the Maryland summer heats up. By taking a few simple measures, you can improve cooling efficiency with your existing system. This will lower energy bills and keep your home comfortable at the same time.

Making Your Home More Efficient
Check the A/C air filter at least once a month. Your air conditioner needs a continuous flow of air to work properly. A clogged air filter causes the air conditioner to work harder.

Plus, it can lead to higher repair costs and eventual system failure. A quick check each month is easy to do. Replace the air filter if it’s dirty.
  • Have an annual A/C inspection. An air conditioner is a mechanical system. During the hot summer months, the equipment is working several hours a day. Over time, the system will start to need some attention to maintain its efficiency. An annual inspection and tuneup from an HVAC professional will keep the system running at its most efficient.
  • Use ceiling fans to increase comfort without lowering the thermostat. Ceiling fans create a cooler feeling for a room’s occupants by moving air across the skin. This allows you to set the thermostat up a few degrees while remaining comfortable.
  • Use a programmable thermostat to maximize efficiency. When no one’s home, there’s no reason for the A/C to be working to keep a comfortable temperature. A programmable thermostat will bring the A/C to a more energy-efficient temperature while you’re gone and make it comfortable when you’re home.

  • Keep doors and windows closed. This seems so basic, but many people still keep doors and windows open. The hot air outside will get inside. It causes the system to work overtime, which drives up energy bills.
