Be sure to check your heat pump or mini-split system to see if it's covered with snow or ice. If your unit is covered with snow or ice, never use a sharp object to chip away at the ice. If you use a sharp object, you could damage the coils or some other area of the equipment. Try removing ice by rinsing the unit with a hose … cold water will remove ice. Make sure the defrost cycle is ready to come back on to keep the water used from freezing.
Also, don’t’ forget to check that your emergency heating source is turned on. If your heat pump is iced over and the switch is left in the on position, there could be excess stress on the unit causing damage. To prevent damage, be sure to turn off the heat pump and turn on your emergency heat source. Next, clear away the ice and check the defrost timer. If the unit is working as it should, turn the unit back on.
