What can void an HVAC warranty?

If you’ve recently invested in a new HVAC system for your home or are planning to do so in the near future, there are a few things you should know about the typical manufacturer’s warranty on this type of equipment. Knowing the details is important to protecting your bottom line, most especially being aware of what can void an HVAC warranty, causing you to lose protection for what you’ve paid.

While HVAC warranty terms and conditions vary from one manufacturer to another, most will withdraw protection under certain circumstances, which commonly include:
  1. Failure to register the warranty – A number of HVAC equipment manufacturers require that you register the warranty with them in order to activate its protections. Typically, there’s a time limit involved, so be sure to check into those details immediately upon purchasing the system.

  2. Improper installation – Poor installation can affect the efficiency, safety, performance and life span of HVAC systems, so most manufacturers will void the warranty if installation isn’t done by a qualified HVAC technician. So choose an HVAC contractor carefully.

  3. Use of off-brand replacement parts – While generic parts may be cheaper than ones made by the manufacturer of your HVAC system, they’re often lower quality than original equipment and less reliable. For that reason, using them is high on the list of what can void an HVAC warranty.

  4. Lack of required professional maintenance – Perhaps the most common reason that an HVAC warranty is voided is poor maintenance. Manufacturers typically require that professional maintenance be done on these systems, generally at least once a year, in order to maintain warranty coverage. So make sure you’re getting your system serviced regularly and that you’re keeping the receipts to prove it.
While those are the most common conditions under which an HVAC warranty is voided, again, terms vary from one warranty to another, so be sure to read the fine print on yours.
